Yoga Bayside began with a simple belief… Yoga should fit you, not the other way around.
My own journey with yoga began more than 30 years ago, at a time when I was trying to manage a chronic illness while working in a high pressure corporate career. Life felt overwhelming at times, and I was looking for something that might help me manage the illness, the stress and the constant juggling act that had become my life.
A friend suggested we try a Yoga class together. I was hesitant, and if I’m honest, I wasn’t convinced it was for me.
But somewhere between that first class and the second, I was hooked.
Yoga became a place of solace for me. I noticed that I always walked out of class feeling better than when I walked in. Physically, my body was becoming more mobile and stronger, but it was the mental benefits that really surprised me. My mind felt quieter. I was sleeping better. My stress was more manageable, and for an hour, I could put everything else down and simply be there.
Over the years, I’ve practised Yoga in studios all around the world and experienced many different approaches to Yoga. Those experiences shaped the kind of Yoga I wanted to offer when I eventually opened my own studios.
Just as importantly, they helped me become very clear about the kind of studio I didn’t want to create.
I didn’t want a studio where people felt they had to look a certain way, be a certain level of flexibility or experience, they didn’t have to measure up, or somehow prove that they belonged. I didn’t want there to be a hierarchy between the people who could put their legs behind their heads and those who couldn’t get anywhere near their toes.
I wanted everyone to feel seen. I wanted everyone to feel like they belonged. I wanted everyone to be able to practice Yoga.
Our philosophy is: Yoga should fit you, not the other way around.
We are all built differently. We all come to the mat with different skeletons, different body shapes, different injuries, experiences and needs. So why would we expect everyone to practice in exactly the same way?
That’s why your Yoga teachers matter so much.
We have some of the most experienced Yoga teachers in Brisbane, with many of our teachers having 10 to 20 years of teaching experience. They understand how to teach asana in a way that is inclusive and adaptable, rather than expecting every body to fit the same shape.
But they also understand that yoga is about far more than the poses.
The physical practice is just one layer of yoga. Alongside the poses, we explore the mindfulness, self awareness, breath, meditation and self discovery that make yoga such a rich and transformative practice.
Because when we focus only on how a pose looks or what the body can do, we can miss some of the most valuable things Yoga has to offer.
The goal isn’t simply to become better at Yoga. It’s to become better at life.
When you practice Yoga with us, this is what we want for you:
- Your mind to feel a little quieter.
- To feel more at ease, mobile and stronger in your body.
- That your back and joints don’t ache quite so much.
- That you get better quality sleep.
- That you don’t feel so overwhelmed with life.
- You take a proper breath for the first time all day or week.
- You have tools to manage stress when life gets difficult.
- Your anxiety doesn’t have so much control over you.
- You leave class feeling better than when you walked in.
- That you feel you belong here.
That’s what Yoga Bayside is here for.
REAL YOGA. REAL PEOPLE. REAL COMMUNITY.
We hope you leave feeling a little better than when you arrived.
